‘rhythm of resistance’
A tribute to the indomitable spirit and pivotal role of Palestinian women during the First Intifada. The uprising, prompted an almost immediate and brutal crackdown, resulting in the tragic loss of over 1,300 Palestinian lives, with more than 120,000 individuals wounded and over 600,000 arrested.
In response to the mass arrest, deportation, and execution campaign against Palestinian men, who were accused of leading the intifada, Palestinian women courageously stepped into leadership roles. Faced with a void left by the targeting of male leaders, women from all sectors of Palestinian society mobilized across generations, political factions, and class lines. This mobilization extended from urban cities to traditional villages.
In the face of adversity, Palestinian women took charge, demonstrating remarkable resilience and unity. They assumed the responsibility of rallying hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in a concerted effort against Israeli colonization and occupation. The collective action of Palestinian women during the First Intifada deserves recognition and remembrance in the collective memory, as it serves as a testament to their strength, determination, and pivotal role in the historical struggle for justice and freedom.
