‘IT Isn’t OVER’
The humble spoon has taken on symbolic status in pro-Palestinian movements after an ingenious jailbreak from Israel's Gilboa prison in September 2021. When six Palestinian political hostages escaped through a narrow underground tunnel, it soon emerged that the audacious breakout had been carried out with makeshift tools - and specifically metal spoons.
According to the hostages accounts, they used smuggled spoons and plates to slowly dig through the concrete floor under a sink, scraping away over months to create a tunnel leading outside the prison walls ‘spoonful by spoonful’.
The saga of the six escapees and their remarkable act of defiance electrified Palestinian society. Overnight, the spoon became a new symbol of the resourcefulness of Palestinian hostages in Israeli jails. Spoons were brandished at rallies in support, appeared on social media icons and street art, and were held up in celebratory gestures.
'It Ain’t Over'
Beyond glorifying the jailbreak, the spoon also came to represent the oppressive conditions in Israeli prisons that would drive detainees to such lengths to secure their freedom after years behind bars. The utensil to digging tool embodied the Palestinian habit of resisting imprisonment through sheer ingenuity. Although majority of the six were eventually recaptured, their exploit had already fused the spoon into the tapestry of Palestinian resistance.
