‘LITTLE BOY’
Handala, the barefoot 10-year-old boy famously created by Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali, has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Palestinian identity and resistance. Always drawn from behind, facing away with his hands clasped behind his back, Handala's face remains hidden until, as the artist said, "justice has been attained" for the Palestinian people.
Handala embodies the experience of generations of Palestinians. His attire and simple sandals reflect the hardships faced by Palestinians since 1948. His turned back represents their forced expulsion, as well as their attachment to a home they cannot return to. Handala's young age signifies both lost childhoods and the promise of a future generation that will someday be free.
